Is there like a setting that needs to be turned on for the blind spot monitor to work? there's something that should light up somewhere on the side mirrors right?

Yep! Most cars with BSM have a button to turn them on/off. It's usually somewhere on the dash, near the steering wheel, or in your infotainment settings under "Driver Assist" or "Safety"

Yeah, look under driver assistance or safety features. Once it's on, you should see a little icon light up on the side mirrors when someone gets in your blind spot, but if it's not lighting up at all, even during startup, might be disabled or there's a sensor issue.

shouldn't this be on automatically? I mean it's weird to have a serring to turn it off and for the car to leave it off. It's a safety feature

Mine has it on without touching anything. It's just the light on the side mirror. Not sure why you'd need to turn anything on, like @Frequentflier11 said, it should be on automatically, at least i think

I think blind spot monitoring kicks in by default on those newer models. But yeah, there are others that let you toggle it in the settings menu or with a dash button. If nothing lights up at all, even on startup, tinker with the settings or do a system check.
