Roof rails showing rust spots

I'm helping my coworker research this rail rust problem on his 2023 Terrain AT4 in Sterling Metallic. He's only had the vehicle for about a year and now spots are appearing on the roof rails. The dealer said it's a known issue with the aluminum rail finish but offered to repaint them once. Has anyone found a permanent solution or preventive treatment for this rail dust problem on their GMC AT4 vehicles?

Same with my dad's 2022 AT4, he noticed the rail dust early on too. The dealer confirmed it's a known issue with the aluminum finish reacting to environmental contaminants. Repainting helps short-term. But for prevention, we used a ceramic coating on the rails. It adds a protective layer and makes cleanup easier. You can try asking your dealer if they'll apply it after the repaint!

Thanks for sharing that! It helps to know your dad's 2022 AT4 ran into the same issue, so it's not just isolated to the 2023. We're leaning toward letting the dealer do the repaint first, then looking into ceramic coating as a follow up. I've read that the coating can bond well to aluminum and help block out moisture and airborne grime but I'm still trying to figure out which product holds up best over time. Did you go with a professional detailer or apply it yourself? We're hoping to get the repaint done before the rainy season kicks in, so timing's tight.
